Family Self - Sufficiency Program

FSS Family

What is the
"Family Self Sufficiency"
program?

Family self sufficiency is designed to help those in Section 8 find a way to achieve economic independence and self-sufficiency. FSS works to break down the barriers a family in Grant County may have to meet individual goals in their lives, such as job education or home ownership.
FSS helps provide opportunities for families to succeed! The participant works one on one with the FSS Coordinator to determine reachable goals, to map out strategies and to provide solutions to overcome barriers.

Who is Eligible?

FSS is designed for Section 8 residents. Though only the designated head of the household must sign the FSS Contract of Participation, the program is designed for the whole family and everybody's needs are taken into account.

What Does FSS Offer?

Guidance and assistance to help you resolve challenges with things such as: GED, College Education, Transportation, Job Training and Placement, Computer Skills, Parenting, Financial Counseling and Child Care.

Why Should I be involved in the FSS Program?

In general, when a family that is in Section 8 has an increase in earned income, the amount the family must pay for rent increases. When this happens, that money is just lost. But if that family is in the FSS Program, the Housing Authority takes the portion of the rent that is raised and places it in a Savings Account. The account is held for the family and can be used to help achieve goals set in the Self-Sufficiency Plan. Once the family has met its goals, they graduate from the program and may cash out the account.

This program component has allowed hundreds of families nationwide to transition from subsidized housing to self-sufficiency and homeownership. Recently, a Grant County FSS family completed the program and was awarded a check in excess of $13,000.00!

What is Required?

The head of household sets goals he/she can reasonably meet in five years, with one of the goals being employment. He/she then signs a contract with the FSS program, attends helpful quarterly workshops, and meets with the FSS staff to map out plans and get help finding resources for achieving those goals.
